Capstone Ministries

Mission/Ministry:

Vision Statement: "To reconcile street children and their families as God originally intented." Capstone Ministries works with children who live full time on the street in Western Kenya. Capstone operates two outreach centers which meet the children where they are. This stage of the ministry works to establish trust, provide mercy care: a meal, a place to bathe, Word care: sharing the Word of God directed to their need, Counseling Care: the vision of school and home is cast each week. Those who desire are taken home directly from this center. Others who need some time are invited to the Transition Center. (CTC) At the CTC, we offer a secure place for short term rehabilitation while the staff works to prepare the home of the child. Here the child is enrolled in school, lives in a typical rural Kenyan home run by Capstone and when he is able, is transitioned to his rural home. Follow up visits are made regularly on all children who have transitioned back to their family. Empowerment of the family is facilitated according to the needs and skills of the individual families. Capstone Ministries also conducts an annual camp for 20 boys who have remained at home and in school. This week loing, VBS style camp, gives encouragement, develops a vision in the child for what he can be with God's help, provides fun scouting activities and provides an intensive spiritual environment that in most cases leads to Baptism and a dedication to a life of faith in Jesus. The parents of the child are invited for a program on the final day and receive parental skills, income generating ideas and are encouraged by the Word of God. Capstone Ministries is inspired by the Scripture from Psalm 118:22 :The stone the builders rejected has become the Capstone." Capstone Ministries is supported by LCMS and AALC congregations in the US as well as individuals. The directors of Capstone are Dan and Patty Schmelzer. Dan also serves as a rostered pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kenya under Bishop Richard Amayo of the Lake Diocese. The ELCK is a partner church of both the LCMS and the AALC.
